What is concurrent enrollment?

Concurrent enrollment is defined as the enrollment of a high school student in a college course taught for high school credit and college-level credit, regardless of the location of instruction. Students who enroll in concurrent classes are enrolled in a course that will count for both college and high school credit.

Where are these classes taught?

The University of Arkansas Hope-Texarkana delivers college credit instruction to qualified high school students through a number of options:

  • College courses at area high schools taught by appropriately credentialed instructors from high school faculty
  • College courses on the UAHT campuses taught by UAHT faculty
  • College courses online taught by UAHT faculty
  • College credit awarded through articulation agreements with area high schools

Who qualifies?

Students must have completed the 8th grade and meet certain ACT or college entry exam requirements.

What are the benefits?

  • Students can graduate college sooner.
  • It is cheaper than regular college tuition rates.
  • Students start college having college credits already on their transcript.
  • Students who participate in concurrent credit are more likely to be successful in college.
  • Students get to experience the many differences and challenges that college courses bring and yet maintain the support of home and high school.

High school students seeking admission for concurrent credit courses for the first time should use the following procedure:
  1. Complete an Application for Admission
  2. Submit an official high school transcript and official college transcripts from any previously attended colleges.
  3. Provide proof of two vaccines against measles, one immunization against rubella, and one immunization against mumps.
  4. Provide placement test scores. Students enrolling must submit ACT scores or take the Accuplacer test administered at the College. Accuplacer exams are given regularly; please contact the Testing Center at 870-722-8247 or to make an appointment visit https://www2.registerblast.com/uacch/Exam/List. For an Accuplacer Study Guide, visit https://accuplacer.collegeboard.org/students.
  5. Each semester, students who are still in high school must also submit the online Concurrent Enrollment Form.
Students who have previously taken a course at UAHT should take the following steps to enroll in a concurrent credit class at their high school:
  1. Submit an updated high school transcript.
  2. Submit any updated ACT test scores.
  3. Complete a Concurrent Enrollment Form to register for classes.
Typically, the high school counselor will work with the UAHT concurrent credit coordinator to collect and submit all necessary student information to the college.

While a student may take other college courses, these are the most popular courses currently offered through UAHTs Bridge to College program.

Courses taken through the UAHT Your Bridge to College Program are accepted for transfer by most four-year universities. Those courses designated as Arkansas Course Transfer System (ACTS) courses are guaranteed to transfer to all public two- and four-year institutions within the state of Arkansas. The Arkansas Course Transfer System contains information about the transferability of courses within Arkansas public colleges and universities. Students are guaranteed the transfer of applicable credits and the equitable treatment in the application of credits for the admissions and degree requirements. Course transferability is not guaranteed for courses listed in ACTS as No Comparable Course. Additionally, courses with a D frequently do not transfer and institutional policies may vary. Courses not having an ACTS number may also transfer. Please consult the receiving institution for complete transfer information.

Students are responsible for requesting transcripts be sent to any college or university where the student is transferring. The transcript request form can be found at https://www.uaht.edu/admissions/transcript-request.php or by contacting Diana Davidson, Registrar, at . Transcript requests will not be honored for any student who is on a business office hold due to non-payment of tuition or unreturned textbooks.

The grades you earn in concurrent credit classes are a part of your college transcript. While taking concurrent credit classes typically does not disqualify students for first-time freshmen scholarships after graduating high school, grades earned for concurrent credit classes will affect a student’s GPA and could possibly impact federal financial aid and academic standing.

If you have questions about the potential transferability of any course, you can contact the Concurrent Credit Coordinator at 870-722-8267.

Under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA), only directory information may be shared with anyone other than the student. Under the provisions in FERPA, UAHT can share students progress with designated personnel from the high school district, usually a counselor, principal, or registrar. College staff can discuss a students grade or work in a course only with express written consent from the student. The consent form can be acquired through your high school counselor or the college.

The Vice Chancellor for Student Services serves as the ADA Compliance Officer. The process of student referral under the Americans with Disabilities Act is as follows:

  • The student is referred to ADA Counselor in Student Support Services.
  • The ADA Counselor interviews the student, collects forms requesting reasonable accommodations, and requests a release of medical documentation.
  • The students medical documentation is presented to the ADA Counselor.
  • The ADA Counselor, in consultation with the ADA Compliance Officer, makes a final determination upon review of the evidence.
  • Notice is given to the student and appropriate instructors as to the final determination of accommodations to be provided.

Any concurrent class you take, whether it is on the high school or college campus, taught by high school or college faculty, will have the same academic standards as the regular UAHT class, and those standards may be different than what you're used to in your high school classes. For instance, don't expect extra credit opportunities-- most instructors don't offer it, and those who do offer only limited opportunities that require extra time and work. The majority of your grade will come from tests and major papers. There is very little busy work in college, and smaller assignments are often used as building blocks for larger projects. A good rule of thumb is to plan to spend two hours of study time per one hour of class time. Since most college classes meet for three hours over the course of the week, you need to budget approximately six hours of work time outside of class for each concurrent course you're taking.

College courses sometimes deal with controversial issues or subject matter that high school courses would ordinarily avoid. Instructors will teach the same course they would teach at UAHT.

Any student enrolled in a UAHT course, regardless of the location of instruction, is considered a UAHT student and is expected to behave as a responsible individual. By registering for a UAHT class, students agree to abide by all College policies, procedures, and rules of conduct outlined in the UAHT College Catalog.

The student enrolling in concurrent classes, or a partnering entity, will be charged tuition at the full rate per ADHE policy. UAHT provides scholarships to concurrent students to reduce the tuition and fees rate by 50%.
